The Carnegie Art Gallery, is a public Art Museum situated in the CBD of Newcastle, adjacent to the Municipal Gardens. Its collection includes contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics, fibre art, beadwork, weaving and wooden carvings by critically acclaimed and recognised South African artists. A unique and valuable collection of African Art & Zulu material cultural objects has also been accumulated.
It holds regular temporary exhibitions and has an active outreach programme and it organises workshops on a variety of practical craft skills. Isiphethu is an example of its success in this field and the embroidered works by members of this group are sold through the Gallery Shop.
The shop has a wide variety of other items for sale including Zulu beadwork, gemstones, object d’art, traditional Zulu beer pots and items made from waste materials such as telephone wire and papier mache.
The building was built in l915 as a Library with funds from the Carnegie Corporation. It is in the classic Edwardian/Georgian style and all the original features have been retained.
It is a declared National Monument and is situated in a historical part of Newcastle.

Tuesday to Friday 0900 – 1700;
Saturday 0900 – 1200.
