The contemporary collection of art reflects the diverse cultural, social and political experience that has shaped the country. It is a small collection but many of South Africa’s critically acclaimed artists are represented and there is also an important holding of art distinctive to the region.

A comprehensive collection of traditional Zulu objects has been built up. These objects have a long history and besides their aesthetic qualities, they embody certain cultural values and meanings.
There is also a collection of crafts and informal artworks. The inclusive nature of the collection has a broad appeal and it promotes the contemporary spirit of art making in the region.
